Purple (1/20/22)

Purple. The color of your high school team. Go Red Wing Wingers Go! You played on the tennis team. Went to State. Were one of the greats.

Purple. The color of the Minnesota Vikings. They broke your heart every year. You kept hope alive for next time. Crushed again.

Purple. The color of our wedding. My sister’s dress. Your brother’s vest. We said “I do” in front of family and friends.

Purple. The color of our bedroom walls. Where you slept next to me for almost 21 years. Made love to me. Held me in your arms.

Purple. The color of the shirt you always wore on “chemo days”. It had three buttons. Easy for port access.

Purple. The color of your lips. When your breath had gone quiet. When I laid across your chest and sobbed. And your arms could no longer hold me.

Purple. The color of my lips. When I drink too much wine. Trying to feel and not to feel all at the same time. Everything is pain. Shut it off.

Purple. The bags under my eyes. Sleepless nights. Too much worry. Stress. My life gone with yours but I am still here. Why?
